Many people on social media have been quick to spot the same glaring issue after pictures captured Pope Leo snagging a rather peculiar gift from a member of the public.

Chicago-born Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was officially installed in his new role on May 8, choosing to take the name Pope Leo XIV. In his first weeks leading the Catholic Church, he has urged for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, demanded an immediate ceasefire in Gaza alongside the release of hostages and delivery of humanitarian aid, and praised the recent truce agreement between India and Pakistan.

On Wednesday (May 28), Pope Leo showed a touch of his American heritage when he made a one-handed catch of a cloth doll tossed by a White Sox baseball fan as he rode through the crowds in the popemobile. The doll was dressed in the very same robes the new pontiff wore when he first appeared on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica following his confirmation.

Though the catch itself was undeniably impressive, everyone online couldn’t help but notice the security lapse that made it possible. “Adorable but his security is definitely slipping,” one Twitter user remarked. A second chimed in, “This is honestly lovely to see but what is his security doing? Seriously,” while a third warned, “That could be dangerous….”

Pope Leo has certainly hit the ground running in his papacy. Beyond his early diplomatic appeals, he’s also begun to address the emerging challenges of artificial intelligence. He explained that he chose his name in homage to Pope Leo XIII, who in 1891 wrote an open letter to all Catholics about how the Industrial Revolution was reshaping workers’ lives.

Reflecting on our own era, the current pope said: “In our own day, the church offers everyone the treasury of its social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and to developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defence of human dignity, justice and labour.” He added that his predecessors—and most recently Pope Francis—have taught us the value of “complete dedication to service and to sober simplicity of life, his abandonment to God throughout his ministry and his serene trust at the moment of his return to the Father’s house.”
